What is Montalcino wine?

Brunello di Montalcino wine is one of Italy’s most famous and important wines. It’s a red wine made from solely from the typical Tuscan grape Sangiovese in the lower part of the region underneath Siena. It’s considered a much more important wine than Chianti Classico due to the amount of time it spends aging before it can be released – 5 years in fact. Let’s start with the cremè de la cremè – a private wine tour for you and your loved ones with pickup and drop-off in Florence. If you’re keen to visit this region, there’s no denying that it’s quite a drive from Tuscany’s capital – nearly 2 hours in fact. That said it’s totally doable on a guided tour like this one.

You’ll visit 3 family-run wineries, enjoying a tour at each and lunch at one of them. You’ll also have a dedicated driver and sommelier with you for the day. The wineries visited on this tour include Franco Pacenti, Tenuta Fanti, and Collosorbo Estate.

If you’re less concerned with a private experience, this is a wonderful and affordable option that includes pickup from Florence. You’ll visit a winery in Montalcino to try the famous Brunello wine as well as a winery in Montepulciano to try their Vino Nobile. Here you’ll also enjoy some cheese tasting as this area is renowned for their pecorino!

In between the winery visits, this tour includes a stop at cheese obsessed Pienza. It was designed to be a utopia or perfect town by Pope Pius II and is very sweet and romantic. You’ll have some free time to wander here or pick up some lunch.

This tour includes a stop at three beautiful Brunello di Montalcino wineries where you’ll enjoy a Tuscan lunch at one of them family-run properties. You will enjoy a walk in the vineyards and get to see the cellars where the wine is produced and aged.

As a bonus, we love that this tour includes a stop in the medieval town of Montalcino itself with free time to explore. It also includes a visit to the wonderful Benedictine Abbey of Sant’Antimo renowned for their special beauty products.

Got your own wheels and happy to drive? This is the tour for you at a wonderful Slow Wine winery (Corte Pavone) in Montalcino. This is a real wine lover’s tour as you’ll be toured by the winemaker herself and even get to taste directly from the barrel.  The winemaker will introduce you to their winemaking philosophy.

Afterwards, you’ll enjoy a Gourmet Brunello Cru Tasting of 6 different Brunello di Montalcino wines (1 vintage Brunello, 3 Brunello Cru, and 2 Brunello Cru Riserva) with specially designed Gourmet Bites to accompany each wine.

Self Guided Option: Best Montalcino wineries to visit

There’s no denying that a self-guided winery tour in Italy can be a little clunky to organise. First off, you’ll need to organise your transport. Either hiring a car and having a designated driver, or hiring a driver for the day (which doesn’t come cheap). Secondly, you need to scour for the best Brunello wineries to visit. The booking process can be clunky as it’s not normally possible online with a lot of these wineries, especially if you’re dreaming about visiting a small, boutique family-run winery. Thirdly, language can also be a problem and do not expect that everyone will speak English (although we do find that Tuscany does this better than a lot of other regions).

We always recommend going with a private or group tour if you really want to enjoy your winery experience. However, here are some wineries that you can contact to organise directly:
